The History of Mabou River Inn

In 1960, the Brothers of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows (founded in Amsterdam, Holland in 1851) bought a property from the family of the late Edward Murray to establish a boarding facility and training centre for the Brotherhood in Mabou. Boarding and vocational schools were established to deal with the needs of young people, particularly those who had trouble adjusting in society, and had learning or behaviour problems.

The house was expanded with two wings in 1964 and 1965 to accommodate more boarders and candidates. Unfortunately, due to a change in policy by the School Board, the boys Boarding School was closed and a new apostolate for the mentally handicapped began in 1970, known as Mary's Hill.

The Brothers owned and operated this Home until 1985. Due to a shortage of manpower, the Brothers transferred ownership of Mary's Hill Home over to the Municipality of the County of Inverness. Once again, due to a policy change the Home was closed and went into private ownership in 1997. Purchased by David and Donna Cameron, it has been renovated and now operates as Mabou River Inn.
